When Is The Best Time To Use Cough Medicine For Kids

Cough Medicine for Kids

Today when children develop a cough for flu, the simple solution is to search for flu medicine for kids. This is what most parents do, assuming it’s the best treatment for their child. However, research is now showing that this is not always the case. In some circumstances, an alternative to cough medicine for kids may provide parents with a better solution.

What Is The Issue With Cough Medicine For Kids?

Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are designed to treat the symptoms of a cough, rather than actually helping with the underlying condition. Multiple scientific studies have now shown that Promethazine or codeine containing cough mixture , if used on below 2 year-old children , could have very serious side effects. There have now been numerous reports of children under the age of 2 actually overdosing on this medicine.

As a result, it has now been advised that parents do not use cough medicine for kids to treat coughs and colds in children younger than the age of 2.

When Should You Use Antibiotics?

Antibiotics are used to combat bacterial infections, however, have little to no effect on viruses (which cause colds and flu’s). If your child has the flu, then antibiotics won’t help. In addition to this, the more your child uses antibiotics indiscriminately at a young age, the more prone they will be to become ill with an antibiotic-resistant infection in the future.

However , antibiotics DO have their place in treatment especially when the child is quite seriously ill . That is a decision best to be left to the doctor to decide.

What Medications Should Be Used To Treat A Common Cold?

There are many over-the-counter pain relievers that can help to reduce fevers and the pain of a sore throat. This helps to reduce any discomfort and provide your child with some relief. If you choose to provide your child with a pain reliever, it is important that you follow dosing guidelines very carefully. For babies younger than 3 months, do not provide them with anything unless advised by a doctor. Do not provide any painkillers to children who are vomiting and/or are dehydrated.

You should also avoid using aspirin for teenagers and children. Although it has been approved for use in children older than 3, children who have recently had the flu should try avoid taking aspirin. Another over-the-counter painkiller you should avoid is codeine. This is because codeine has a number of risks including a difficulty breathing, addition, overdose and in the worst cases even death.

How Can I Help My Child Feel Better Without Medicine?

Rather than consistently using cough medicine for kids, there are a number of things you can do to help your child feel better without the need for medicine.

One of the best things you can do is keep them hydrated. Offer them plenty of water, juices and even a broth to help alleviate symptoms. You can also make use of warm liquids such as tea and soup which are known to have a soothing effect.

If you have one available, make use of a cool-mist humidifier. This simple device will help to add moisture in the air which will reduce the drying of the throat and nasal passages. This can help to induce sleep which will further assist with the recovery process.

If your child is struggling to breathe through their nose, you can use a nasal saline. For younger children, it is advised that you use nasal drops, wait around 10 seconds and use a suction bulb to remove mucus. For older children, you can use an over-the-counter saline nasal spray.

For children over the age of 6, you can encourage gargling warm salt water. This will help to soothe throat pain. For throat pain, you can also ‘prescribe’ a hard candy. Research has shown that a hard candy is just as effective for throat pain as medicated lozenges, without the potential side effects they bring. You can also make use of cold or frozen foods such as ice cream and fruit pops. These have also shown to be soothing for a sore throat (and it’s always nice to give your child a treat when they’re not feeling their best.

How To Avoid Colds Altogether

Make sure that you teach your child the importance of washing their hand as thoroughly as possible with warm, soapy water. Also, make sure that toys and surfaces are kept clean after they have been played with. If possible, avoid touching your child’s face. They can become sick very easily due to germs passed over through contact with their face.

A balanced diet with good portion of vegetables , fruits & meat will be helpful to build up their immune system .

If they fall sick, without relief of off-the- counter medication for two days , it may be time to see a medical professional such as GP’s such at Anteh Dispensary.

Why Having A Good GP Nearby Is Important

Caring Family Doctor

Knowing that you’re supported medically is a great feeling. The ability to visit your GP if anything is wrong is truly something that we take for granted and can be found simply by searching for a good GP near me. If you have any kind of medical needs from flu symptoms, a horrible back pain, or an unexpected rash, a 10-minute appointment can have you sorted. Your physician can provide you with a comprehensive solution to any healthcare situation. However, by having a family GP near your home brings with it additional benefits.

In certain medical emergencies, visiting your GP may not be an option. An emergency is the only time you should end up in the emergency room, however many individuals use this as their primary source of care. This can not only cause problems for the medical department but will also cost you more in the long term.

By searching for a cheap doctor near me, you can find a GP who can treat not only yourself but your entire family. You can build great relationships with the staff, who can provide you with expert care when you need it. Here are some of the main benefits of using a family GP near your home.

1. Family Physicians Will Stay With you Throughout Life

It is a well-known fact that most people hate seeing their GP. Whether they’re afraid of seeing the doctor or ashamed of the problem they have, they will avoid going to the doctors until things become very severe. However, by working with a family physician, you can develop a healthy relationship in which you trust your doctor. This is fantastic for children, who can go through their life seeing the same doctor.

This is significantly better than visiting the emergency room every time you feel ill. You will always be with the same GP, who will understand your medical history and personality. They will make you feel comfortable with each appointment and ensure you never have to dread that visit to the doctors.

2. A Family Doctor Will Know Your Family History

As the medical field becomes more advanced, we are now discovering the link between your genetics and the risk of developing particular diseases. Once a doctor has treated you for years, they will know both your medical history and the medical history of your family. This will help them to provide you with a more accurate diagnosis, watch out for any risks regarding medication, and monitor any changes to your health that occur as you grow.

As your family doctor would have worked with multiple generations of your family, they can also store the medical history of your family. This brings with it a wide range of benefits. For example, if they know that you have a grandparent who had cancer, it is possible that you may be more at risk of developing that type of cancer.

3. Family Doctors Can Treat More Than You Think

It’s important to remember that any GP went to medical school. During this process, they developed a wealth of experience and knowledge within the medical field. As a result, they are able to treat a wide range of different conditions. They can help you to manage any chronic conditions you suffer from, including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. In addition to this, they can help with pregnancy and acute situations such as minor injuries and sinus infections. Some GP’s can also perform various on-the-spot blood investigations, complete minor surgical treatments such as stitching up a wound, draining an abscess, excising a lump, performing bedside ultrasound, or freezing a wart.

4. They Have Many Links To Specialists

Although your GP may not have the medical specialization of other specialists, they will have links to other experts. For example, if you suffer from heart disease or cancer, they will know someone personally who can help you. Alternatively, if you have suffered from a sports injury, it is likely they will know a local physiotherapist who can cater to your needs. It is very likely that this other expert will work in a similar fashion to your doctor. This will help to put you at ease knowing that you’re under the care of someone who is trusted by your GP.

If you don’t already have a link to a local family doctor, then simply search for a good GP near me. There will be many different options to choose from, such as Anteh Dispensary who care for thousands of patients every year. The sooner you begin developing this long term relationship, the sooner you can begin to enjoy the benefits that come with it. Your children will also be able to enjoy these benefits and will also experience a more in-depth medical treatment with each checkup.

Can post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) stop me getting HIV?

Post-exposure prophylaxis

Post-exposure prophylaxis, also known as PEP medication, is designed to stop you from developing an HIV infection if you have already been exposed to the virus. However, it does not have a 100% success rate. This is due to a wide range of reasons, including when you contracted the virus, the time between contraction and your visit to the doctors, as well as your body itself. Ways You Can Become Exposed to HIV

Though in many developed countries, HIV is not as common as many other STI’s, this does not mean it is not a risk. In Singapore, it is predicted that around 450 cases have been reported annually since 2008. That means that 5400 new infections have been discovered over the last 12 years. Here are some of the ways you can be exposed to HIV:

Unprotected Sex

If you have had unprotected sex without a condom with a new sexual partner you may be at risk of contracting HIV. It is important than whenever you change sexual partners you get yourself checked before you have had unprotected sex. The best way to protect yourself is to always use a condom unless you are in a long-term relationship in which you have both been tested.

A Broken Condom

Unfortunately, even if you do use a condom for sex, you cannot always guarantee your protection. In some cases, a condom may break, resulting in unprotected sex. Should this occur, we suggest visiting your local doctor or clinic as soon as possible to get tested. Even if there is no obvious breakage, the condom manufacturer cannot guarantee their condom is 100% leak proof. Micro-tear maybe there not visible to our naked eyes.

An HIV-Infected Needle

If you or a loved one has been injured with an HIV-infected needle then it is possible to contract HIV. Needles should always be clean and will be when used at a professional medical center. Avoid any contact with any form of needle outside these premises to reduce your risk of contracting HIV.

What is PEP Medication?

PEP is a course of anti-HIV medication. It is provided to individuals who have recently come into contact with another individual with HIV. In general, it is more effective the sooner it is taken and should be taken within 72 hours after initial contact. The medicine must be taken every day for around 28 days (4 weeks). If the course is started 72 hours after initial contact, then it will usually not have any effect. As a result, it is not usually prescribed after this time. It is best to begin taking the medication within a single day after being exposed to HIV.

PEP can also reduce the risk of becoming infected by HIV significantly. However, it is important that this is a medicine and can have its potential side effect. Though the side effect is usually mild, PEP should not be used as a routine. The treatment may also not work due to a wide array of additional reasons including:

Taking the medicine incorrectly: This could mean at the wrong time, missing out on a day, or taking all of the medicine at once. You cannot take two pills on one day as you missed out on the other. If you miss a pill, contact your doctor or clinic immediately to get professional advice.

Delay taking medication: If you have been prescribed PEPit is important to begin taking your medicine straight away. Do not delay taking it each day. The longer you leave it, the less effective it is likely to be.

Are There Any Side Effects Of PEP?

Much like any other medication, PEP can have a range of side effects for individuals who take the medication. These include but are not exclusive to:

● Tiredness

● Diarrhea

● Nausea

● Vomiting

● Feeling generally unwell

However, more than 90% of patients find very mild or no side effects at all.

As time goes on and you continue with your course, these side effects will usually disappear. Should they remain, it is important that you contact your doctor as soon as possible to inform them of the issues you are experiencing.

How Can I Get PEP?

PEP is only available on prescription from medical bodies in your local area. You can get PEP from any of the following:

● A family physician specializing in sexual health or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic

● An HIV clinic

● Some A&E department of a hospital

However, the ability to get your hands on PEP may differ depending on the area in which you live. Many local GP’s may not be able to prescribe PEP and therefore you may have to go to a local sexual health clinic instead.

In order to get PEP, you will often be asked a number of questions so the clinic can understand how you contracted the infection. This may include:

The person (or people) you have had sex with in order to assess your risk of exposure. Strangers may carry a higher risk.

Whether you had vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Whether the other person was the one who you got HIV from or you believe it could have been from a previous partner.

How long ago you have any sexual relations with that particular individual.

From these questions, a doctor is able to determine whether or not you are at risk. If they believe you are not at risk, they are unlikely to prescribe you with PEP.

What Hair Loss Treatment is the Best Option For You?

Hair Loss Treatment

Unfortunately, in the modern world, we still experience hair loss. Even with our abundance of technology, many individuals will experience hair loss throughout their lives. This impacts both men and women and can have a wide array of impacts from person to person. For some, hair loss is accepted as part of life. However, for others, they wish to retain their hair as it once was. The best way of doing this is to visit a professional hair loss clinic, here; they can diagnose the causes of your hair loss, as well as provide you with comprehensive solutions as to which procedure will be the best for you.

Diagnosis for Hair Loss

Before making any diagnosis, a doctor will usually provide you with a physical examination; ask about your diet, your hair routine as well as the medical history of your family. They may also ask you to take tests such as:

Blood Tests: These can help to uncover any unseen medical conditions that can result in hair loss.

Pull Test: Your doctor will pull several hairs from your head to see how many come out. This will help to determine what stage of hair loss you are at.

Scalp Biopsy: During this test, your doctor will scrape samples from the skin or a few hairs that have been plucked from your scalp. They will then be examined under a microscope. This can determine whether or not your hair loss is being caused by an infection.

Light Microscopy: A special instrument will be used to examine hairs trimmed at the base. This helps to discover any potential disorders of the hair shaft.

What Treatment is the Best for Me?

Luckily, due to modern technology, there are a number of effective treatments for certain types of hair loss. As a result, it is possible to slow down hair loss and reverse it altogether. With certain conditions, such as alopecia areata (also known as patchy hair loss) your hair may actually regrow back in less than a year without any treatment being needed. Here are some of the options you should consider when it comes to seeking treatment.

Medication

Medication is the best option for hair loss. The medication will help to treat the disease which will, therefore, reduce your hair loss. If the medication itself is the reason for hair loss, it may be advised by a professional that you stop using it for at least a few months. Medications are also available to treat pattern baldness (also known as hereditary). These include:

Minoxidil: This can be purchased over-the-counter (nonprescription) minoxidil and comes in liquid, foam, and shampoo forms. For the greatest effect, apply the product directly to your scalp once a day for women and twice a day for men. The foam can also be applied to the scalp when the hair is wet.

Products that contain doses of minoxidil are used to help thousands of individuals regrow their hair or at least slow the rate of hair loss. In general, this medication will take around 6 months of treatment to prevent any further hair loss and begin the process of regrowth. After this 6 month period, it will take a further 3-5 months to determine whether or not the treatment is working. Should it have an impact, the medicine can be used indefinitely to maintain your benefits.

There are a few side effects of this medication including unwanted hair growth on the skin, face, and hands as well as potential scalp irritation the first few times it is used.

Finasteride (Propecia): Unlike Minoxidil, this is a prescription drug that has been designed for men. It must be taken once a day and helps to slow down the process of hair loss and may even cause new hair growth. It takes a few months to have any impact and require indefinite consumption or long-lasting impacts. However, it may not have a significant impact on elderly men.

Side effects include a lower sex drive. However, this is reversible upon discontinuation of the medicine. Not permanent damage.

Fortunately, there is no increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer [ Goodman PJ, New England Journal of Medicine. 2019;380 (4):393-394. However, women who are pregnant are also advised to avoid touching crushed or broken tablets.

Hair Transplant Surgery

This is the most common hair loss treatment for permanent hair loss in which the top of the head is affected. Hair transplants make use of what hair you have left to create new roots for hair to grow. Throughout the procedure, a dermatologist will remove hair from a part of the head that currently grows hair and moves this to a bald area. For every patch of hair, your scalp actually has several hairs. In some cases, a larger strip of the skin may also be used for certain areas. The patient is usually sedated for this process to limit any pain experienced.

Possible side effects include bleeding, bruising, swelling, and infection. However, these will usually fade a few days after the initial session. Sometimes, more than one session is required in order to get the impact you are looking for.

Laser Therapy

A low-level laser device as a treatment can also be used for both men and women who are experiencing hereditary hair loss. New research has shown that it can improve hair density and help hair growth to increase. However, due to the fact that the research is relatively new, more studies are required to determine the long-term impacts.

Causes of Ingrown Toenails

If this does occur, your parents will be able to inform you of how they dealt with the issue as well as provide you with any tips they picked up throughout their experience.

Poor-fitting footwear

Your choice of footwear will contribute to the growth of your toenails and therefore can impact the development of an ingrown toenail. By crowding your feet into tight-fitting shoes will increase the risk of ingrown toenails. This is one of the reasons that children and teenagers develop ingrown toenails while their feet are growing. They may quickly outgrow their footwear in only a few months, which can leave them with tight shoes for some time before they are replaced. Always make sure that your footwear is appropriately fit to ensure your nails have the room they need to grow.

Trauma

On the rare occasion where you accidentally stubbed or jammed your toe on something such as a chair or table, thismight actually cause an ingrown toenail to develop as well. This can also be caused by dropping a heavy item on your toe or participating in a sport that places pressure on your toes. Such sports including running (both sprinting and long-distance), football and ballet. Make sure that you have the best possible footwear for each of these as this will help to limit and lower your risk.

Incorrect Trimming

This is one of the most common causes of ingrown toenails. It is caused when an individual cut their nails too short. Whilst being so short, the skin around the nails automatically folds over as a natural form of protection. This causes the nail to grow into the skin, causing extremely painful ingrown nails. When using the clippers, make sure to always cut across. Never cut down or in the direction of your skin.

Pedicures

All around the globe, thousands of individuals enjoy getting pedicures every month. This practice in itself is completely fine and when completed by a skilled technician, can bring a wide array of benefits. However, if the nail technician is overly aggressive when it comes to cutting back the toenail, they may actually cause more harm than good. Much like cutting the nail back too much yourself, the technician can repeat this causing painful ingrown toenails. It is fine to continue with your pedicures, just make sure your technician has the right experience and knowledge!

Poor Circulation

According to modern research, adults who have been diagnosed with poor circulation are more prone to the development of ingrown toenails. If you have a history of diabetes, heart disease or you have used tobacco must of your life, it is important to see a doctor regarding ingrown toenails. Not only can this cause ingrown toenails, but a number of additional side effects which can be detrimental to your life.

Treatment For Ingrown Toenails

So, you have developed an ingrown toenail that is causing you some minor discomfort. There is no reason to panic and if treated correctly the nail may correct itself. Here are some of the best ways you can treat your nail without causing extra pain or damage.

Soak In Warm Soapy Water

Much like any other cut, you want to keep the area as clean and bacteria-free as possible. Soaking the foot will help to reduce any swelling in the area as well as ease pain. This should be repeated around three times a day for up to 20 minutes. If you are not a fan of soap, or wish for greater relief you can also add Epsom salts to the water for further pain relief.

Only Wear Comfortable Shoes and Socks

If you have already developed an ingrown toenail, you want to make sure it is not restricted in footwear. Avoid all shoes and socks that may be too tight and if possible, simply avoid them altogether. This will help the toenail from worsening by providing it with the necessary space it requires. Limit the pressure on your toenails wherever possible as this will help to speed up recovery.

See A Professional

If your infected toenail continuously worsens or if the pain becomes too extreme for home treatment, visit an ingrown toenail clinic. They can provide you with professional ingrown toenail treatment or ingrown toenail removal services if the nail has become too damaged or the pain too severe. This will allow for the infection to effectively heal whilst also preventing recurring ingrown toenails in the future. If you are unsure as to whether or not you need to see a professional, call your local doctors to gain professional medical advice.

Rapid Syphilis Test In Singapore

Rapid Syphilis Test and Treatment

Syphilis is well known infection all around the world but what does this infection actually cause? How is it transmitted and what treatments are available? Syphilis is a type of sexually transmitted infection which can have a wide range of impacts on the body. If left untreated, these impacts can become extremely serious and even impact your brain. As a result, treatment for syphilis is crucial. Making sure that you find a rapid syphilis test will help to ensure that you can get rapid syphilis treatment, which will allow you to reduce the impact of any long term effects.

Syphilis itself is spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex and can also be spread through sharing sex toys with someone who is already infected. It can be prevented altogether by using a condom during sex or during oral. If an individual becomes infected then the infection can be treated with an injection or antibiotic tablets. In order to make sure you’re as protected as possible, we always recommend taking a syphilis test after having non protected sexual interaction with a new partner. Here is everything that you need to know about the infection so that you can keep yourself safe.

Symptoms of Syphilis

It is important to note that the symptoms of syphilis can differ significantly from person to person and in some cases, people may show no symptoms at all until it has been in their system for years. This is why testing is so important once you have had sexual encounters with a new partner. In general, even if symptoms are shown, the symptoms themselves are not always obvious and may even disappear. Whilst the symptoms may no longer show, it is likely that the individual will still have the infection.

Of those with syphilis, most might in fact experience “no symptoms”. However, symptoms of syphilis include small sores around your genitals or bottom, a rash (usually on your hands or feet) and white patches in your mouth. In addition to this, individuals may also encounter a blotchy red rash that often affects the palms of the hands or soles of the feet. This rash is often very visible and is a clear sign that you should immediately go to the doctors to get tested. Another visible symptom is the development of small skin growths (similar to genital warts) that may develop on the vulva in women or around the bottom (anus) in both men and women.

In addition to physical symptoms, it is possible at times for people with the infection to display some symptoms similar to a sickness. These include feeling tired with continuous headaches, as well as a fever and even pains in the joints. If you display any number of the following after a sexual encounter with someone in the past few weeks, it is crucial that you go to see your doctor.

If left untreated, syphilis can become very serious. Over the years, it can spread to various parts of your body which can cause long-term joint dysfunction as well as issues with the functionality of the brain. As a result, this infection must be treated as soon as possible in order to prevent any forms of long term damage. Although going to your doctors may appear embarrassing, this short period of embarrassment is worth it in order to kill off the infection.

Treatments

Once you have had a rapid syphilis test you can get started with your syphilis treatment. There are two main ways of treating syphilis depending on your personal preferences, as well as any medical conditions that you may already have.

The most popular form of treatment is an injection of antibiotics. This is usually applied to the buttocks and may require only a single treatment. However, if you have had syphilis for a longer period of time, it may be recommended that you have around 3 injections which are applied over 3 weeks. This will make sure that the infection is completely killed and cannot return to your system.

If you are unable to have the injection you will be prescribed with a course of antibiotic tablets. These tablets must be taken daily for between 2 to 4 weeks. Much like the injection treatment, the time for which you must take the antibiotics will depend on how long you have had the injection. Once you have finished your course, the infection should be killed completely.

It is important to remember that neither of these treatments will make you immune and you will be able to contract the infection again should you have sexual relations with an individual who is already infected. Once you have had your treatment, you should avoid any sexual contact for at least two weeks after the end of your treatment.

If you think that you may be at risk as you have forgotten to use protection, regardless of whether you have or do not have any symptoms, arrange an appointment with our team today and we can provide you with a rapid syphilis test. Results will be known within 20 minutes.
